Defense Minister General Ngo Xuan Lich and his RoK counterpart Song Young-moo

RoK Defense Minister Song Young-moo is in Vietnam from June 3-5.

During talks with his RoK counterpart Song Young-moo following the welcome ceremony, General Lich highlighted the visit, saying that it will facilitate the effective implementation of the Joint Vision Statement on Defense Cooperation through 2030 signed in April 2018 between the two defense ministries and create a new momentum for the bilateral defense relations.

It will also help maintain good ties between the two countries and armies, contributing to strengthening political trust between the two peoples, General Lich said.

The Vietnamese Defense Minister expressed support for denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to fostering stable and long-term ties with the RoK.

At the talks

For his part, the RoK Defense Minister said the RoK highly appreciates Vietnam’s active position in ASEAN as well as regional mechanisms.

He emphasized that Vietnam is considered a bridge for the RoK to successfully implement its New Southern Policy in the region and added that, during President Moon Jae-in’s Vietnam visit in March this year, both sides agreed to effectively promoted cooperation fields in line with the signed deals between the two nations.

At the talks, both sides discussed issues regarding regional and global security of mutual concern. They agreed to bolster bilateral defense cooperation in the time to come in human resources training, defense industry, search for remains of servicemen missing in action, and addressing post-war bomb and mine consequences.

After the talk, they witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on logistics support for peacekeeping forces, natural disaster and humanitarian relief between the two defense ministries.
