DCS patient receives urgent care on Son Ca Island
PANO – On September 26, the infirmary of Son Ca (Sand Cay) Island, Truong Sa district, Khanh Hoa province provided emergency care for a fisherman suffering from decompression sickness (DCS) after a deep-sea dive.
Nguyen Huu Thanh (aged 34) from Hoai Huong ward, Hoai Nhon town, Binh Dinh province, was working onboard the fishing vessel BD 96945, captained by Vo Ba Truong.

Early on September 25, at around 5 a.m., while fishing approximately 100 nautical miles from Son Ca Island, Thanh dove 20 meters to retrieve a net. After surfacing, he began feeling unwell, experiencing chills, fainting, and intense chest pain. Despite having received immediate first aid from his crewmates, his condition did not improve.
The crew rushed Thanh to the Son Ca Infirmary at 11:30p.m. on the same day. Upon examination, doctors diagnosed him with severe type II DCS.

The medical team immediately initiated emergency treatment, which included placing him in a supine position with his head lowered, administering oxygen, inserting a urinary catheter, and providing fluids, anticoagulants, and antibiotics.
Within an hour, Thanh’s condition showed signs of improvement. However, he is still experiencing fatigue and both lower limbs are paralyzed. The doctors are closely monitoring his progress and continuing to provide intensive care.
