On the morning of September 14, at An Binh village, Vu Thu commune, Hung Yen province, a delegation from Military Region 3, led by its Commander Lt. Gen. Luong Van Kiem, visited the family of Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung to pay tribute and extend condolences.

Tran Van Tung was the Officer Commanding of Battalion 3, Infantry Regiment 568 under the Hung Yen Provincial Military Command. At about 9:40 a.m. on September 12, on his way back to his unit, he encountered a man struggling with his mother and learned that he intended to take his own life. Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung and a passerby quickly approached, persuaded and encouraged him to give up the attempt. The man agreed and asked Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung to take him home. However, while Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung was returning to get his motorbike, the man suddenly jumped into the Tra Ly River. Without hesitation, Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung took off his uniform, left his military equipment on his motorbike, and jumped into the river to rescue him. Although Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung reached the man, the strong current swept both of them away, resulting his death.

Authorized by the higher level, Lt. Gen. Luong Van Kiem presented the family with the decision on promoting Maj. Tran Van Tung to Lt. Col.

He expressed his deep sorrow and admiration for Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung’s brave, humane, and noble act. He extended his deepest condolences to the family and offered his sympathy and encouragement to them in the face of their grief and loss.

Also on the same day, many military units under MR3 sent delegations to pay tribute and extend condolences to the family of Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung.

Earlier, on the afternoon of September 13, Lt. Gen. Luong Van Kiem and the Military Region 3 delegation visited the family to offer condolences, sympathy, and encouragement to Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung’s relatives.

The Commander of Military Region 3 requested relevant agencies of the Military Region and the Hung Yen Provincial Military Command to closely coordinate in organizing the funeral and ensure the timely and thorough implementation of policies and benefits for Lt. Col. Tran Van Tung and his family.
