Doctor gives emergency aid to the patient.

The patient was Pham Xuan Ha, born in 1988, a resident in Phan Ri Cua commune, Lam Dong province, a crew-member of fishing vessel QNg 96199-TS with Le Du, born in 1971, from Ly Son Special Zone, Quang Ngai province at the helm.

While fishing about 20 nautical miles from Song Tu Tay Island on November 12, Ha conducted three deep dives lasting 20-30 minutes each, the last one ended at 16:00.

He rested on the boat, but at 06:00 on November 13, he awoke feeling severely fatigued with left-sided weakness. Other crew-members attempted a 1-hour recompression at 14 meters depth, but Ha’s condition did not improve. He was brought to the island infirmary at 13:45 the same day.

The patient was diagnosed with severe acute decompression sickness, complicated by shock, neurological impairment, intestinal paralysis, and urinary retention. The infirmary consulted with the Naval Medical Institute and initiated the treatment following protocol.

The patient’s condition was rather serious and the doctors decided to keep him on the island for continued monitoring and further treatment.
