Vietnam attends Coast Guard Global Summit in Tokyo
PANO - A Vietnamese delegation, led by Major General Bui Trung Dung, Deputy Commander of the Vietnam Coast Guard, attended the second Coast Guard Global Summit with the participation of coast guard leaders from 57 countries and eight international organizations on November 20 in Tokyo.
Speaking at the event, Commander of the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) Shuichi Iwanami laid a stress on the rapidly-changing global security environment with emerging non-traditional security threats. A single country cannot cope with these challenges in an effective manner, so JCG cooperated with the Nippon Foundation to organize the summit with the aim of promoting collaboration and coordination among coast guard forces throughout the world, he said.

In the framework of the summit, participants shared their practical experience in ensuring the maritime security and safety of each country, and discussed measures to develop human resources to cope with global challenges.
Addressing the event, Gen. Dung said that in recent years, especially since the beginning of the 21st century, the countries have faced many non-traditional security challenges. In the context of global integration, countries should promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation to deal with sea safety and security issues. Vietnam has actively participated in bilateral and multilateral activities around the world and in the region, and has become an active member, the Vietnamese delegation's leader stressed.
Regarding the Vietnam-Japan cooperation in the sector, he added that over the past time, the cooperation between the two coast guard forces has seen tremendous developments. Since the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bilateral cooperation in 2015 they have organized a number of bilateral conferences to review contents of the cooperation and outline a new plan for the coming years.
Dung said Japan has helped Vietnam develop human resources, organize scientific conferences and send JCG ships to Vietnam. The Vietnam Coast Guard will also send a ship to pay a visit to Japan in December.
During the summit, JCG will hold a maritime search and rescue drill with the participation of patrol ships and aircraft from the coast guards of Tokyo, Miyagi prefecture, Yokohama city and Haneda Air Base.
