The officers and staff of the Petroleum Department pay tribute to General Vo Nguyen Giap.

The event was to mark the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2) and the 114th birthday anniversary of General Vo Nguyen Giap (August 25, 1911 - 2025).

This set was part of the legendary Truong Son oil pipeline, for which General Vo Nguyen Giap personally facilitated the handover from the Soviet Union, initiated its use, and gave numerous important directives during its installation and operation.

As the Commander-in-Chief of the Vietnam People's Army, Gen. Giap made major contributions to the establishment and development of the military's petroleum industry, particularly during the early phase of the national resistance war against the U.S. imperialists for national salvation. His efforts included the construction of fuel depots and underground oil pipeline through key points, ensuring a continuous petroleum supply for combat units. Notably, in 1968, following a working visit to the Soviet Union, he proposed the idea of a field oil pipeline and received two sets as Soviet aid, laying the foundation for the legendary mission of cutting through the Truong Son Range to construct the oil pipeline of the petroleum soldiers.

Maj. Gen. Nguyen Van Luc speaks at the event.

Amidst the enemy’s fierce attacks and based on an idea from General Vo Nguyen Giap, the Vietnam People’s Army, with breakthrough thinking and creative spirit, researched, developed, and utilized a field pipeline system. This project established a legendary 5,000-kilometer network that connected the North and South of Vietnam, consisting of more than 300 fuel pumping stations and 100 storage sites with a total capacity of over 330,000 cubic meters. The project served to provide the battlefields with a substantial volume of fuel for combat. It demonstrated “the strong will, courage, resourcefulness, and creativity of the petroleum troops,” as General Vo Nguyen Giap remarked.

At the request of General Vo Nguyen Giap’s family to recover relics from the Truong Son petroleum pipeline, a project that bore the imprint of his vision and determination during the resistance war, the Party Committee and leadership of the Department of Petroleum directed relevant agencies and units to survey, locate, restore, transport, and assemble a segment of the wartime field pipeline. This was presented to General Giap’s family on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day, and his 114th birthday anniversary.

The gift represented a profound tribute to General Vo Nguyen Giap as well as to the generations of petroleum soldiers who quietly dedicated and sacrificed themselves to keep the “lifeline of fuel” flowing, contributing to the nation’s ultimate victory.
