The program helps fishermen continue fishing at sea and encourages them to join functional forces’ efforts in firmly defending the national sovereignty over sacred sea and islands.

Coast Guard Region 3's representatives presenting national flags to fishermen in Ba Tri district

Having returned from a long voyage, fisherman Nguyen Van Hon (from An Thuy commune, Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province), owner of trawler BT 95589 TS, began to check the trawler’s engine to prepare for the next trip. While rearranging the national flag flown on his trawler, Hon said, “This new flag has just been given to me by the coast guard force. Before each voyage, I check the flag and choose the highest and most solemn place to hang it. In the middle of the sea, each flag is like a landmark affirming the national sovereignty over sea and islands.”

The activity of presenting national flags to fishermen is one of the contents within the "Coast Guards stand by the fishermen" program implemented by the coast guard force since March 2017. The program features other important contents, including mass mobilization activities and dissemination of the Party's guidelines and the State's policies and laws and legal education for people. The coast guards also participate in building safe localities and firm political system and assist local people develop socio-economy and fish at sea, contributing to maintaining the security and national sovereignty over sea and islands.

During the “Coast guards stand by fishermen" program in Ba Tri district, Coast Guard Region 3 cooperated with the Ben Tre provincial Party Committee's Mass Mobilization Committee to hold a series of activities, including dissemination of the Vietnam Coast Guard Law, regulations on the prevention and combat of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and the Law on Drug Prevention and Control for 300 ship owners, fishermen, and people in An Thuy, Tan Thuy, An Hoa Tay communes.

The organizing panel also held the “I love national sea and islands" contest for students from three secondary schools of An Thuy, An Hoa Tay, and Tran Huu Nghiep. At the contest, the organizers awarded 120 scholarships and 20 bicycles to needy students who overcame difficulties to obtain good academic results. 

On this occasion, Coast Guard Region 3 coordinated with agencies and units to give 300 gifts, worth VND 1 million each, to policy families and needy fishermen  and hand over 2,000 national flags to fishermen in Ba Tri district.

Major General Do Hong Do, Political Commissar of Coast Guard Region 3 said that the "Coast Guards stand by fishermen" program is an activity demonstrating the sentiment and responsibility of troops of the coast guard force in general and Coast Guard Region 3 for policy families, ethnic minority people, religious people, fishermen, and pupils in difficult circumstances. Activities in the program have contributed to strengthening the solidarity between troops and people and enhancing citizens’ patriotism and love for the sea and islands and their awareness of and responsibility for the cause of building and protecting national sovereignty over sea and islands.”
