In the early days of this March, following troops of Coast Guard Region 4, I visited several localities in Ca Mau province to carry out a law dissemination activity to raise local fishermen’s awareness. Meeting again fisherman Nguyen Dinh Long, aged 60, from hamlet 3, Tam Giang Tay commune (Ngoc Hien, Ca Mau), he recalled that at the end of December 2023, while fishing in the waters near Hon Khoai island, a large storm suddenly came and his trawler was overturned. He and eight other fishermen on board fell into the sea. Luckily, they were rescued in time by the coast guard force and nearby fishing boats.

Troops of Coast Guard Region 4 regularly conduct patrols to control the sea, becoming a firm fulcrum for fishermen.

According to Major General Nguyen Van Dung, Political Commissar of Coast Guard Region 4, over the past time, the unit has closely coordinated with the local authorities to effectively implement the “Coast guards stand by fishermen” program. Regardless of harsh weather conditions, troops have successfully accomplished the key political tasks and actively promoted law dissemination about national sea and islands. The coast guard force has become a firm fulcrum for fishermen to reach out to the sea, contributing to tightening military-civilian ties and safeguarding national sovereignty over sea and islands.

In 2024 alone, the Coast Guard Region 4, together with provinces, conducted law dissemination work for nearly 70,000 troops, party members, local people, and students in coastal localities; handed over more than 3,000 national flags, Uncle Ho’s portraits, medical kits, and gifts to fishermen; offered over 400 bicycles and scholarships to disadvantaged students, and sponsored 12 students with extremely difficult conditions, among others.
