Law dissemination enhanced to raise awareness of fishermen in Gulf of Tonkin
PANO - At the end of November, while performing the combat readiness duty combined with patrol and law enforcement inspection with Ship 2005 of Naval Squadron 111 under Flotilla 11 of Coast Guard Region 1 in the Gulf of Tonkin, I participated in a dissemination activity to raise fishermen’s awareness of the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Surrounding the waters where Ship 2005 was anchored, there were offshore fishing trawlers of fishermen from Central provinces, such as Thanh Hoa, Quang Binh, Quang Ngai, and Binh Thuan. These trawlers often stay at sea for 6 months to a year. After a fishing trip, the fishermen sell their products to purchasing ships, then head to nearby islands or fishing logistics service centers to refuel, stock ice, and prepare for the next trip.

Boarding trawler BD 94040 TS, captained by Nguyen Vuong from My Thanh commune, Phu My district, Binh Dinh province, the working delegation of Ship 2005 disseminated information related to the European Commission (E.C.)’s regulations on fishing, focusing on 12 types of IUU violations; the impact of the E.C.’s IUU penalties on Vietnam’s seafood exports; and the Prime Minister’s directives on urgent tasks and solutions to address the EC’s warning on IUU prevention.
According to Nguyen Vuong, thanks to coast guards, fishermen have raised their awareness while fishing at sea. When the trawler was ashore, he and other crew-members on board signed a commitment to strictly follow the State’s regulations on fishing and protecting marine resources. He would encourage other fishermen to avoid illegal fishing in foreign waters.
The delegation continued to visit other trawlers operating in the Gulf of Tonkin to disseminate legal information and present gifts to fishermen. Meanwhile, the delegation handed over 50 national flags and distributed more than 300 leaflets to fishermen.
Captain Vu Van Quang, Political Commissar of Ship 2005, shared that while performing long missions at sea, they often conduct law dissemination to raise fishermen’s awareness. The activities have helped fishermen strictly comply with the State’s laws and relevant international regulations while fishing at sea, contributing to lifting the E.C.’s “yellow card” against Vietnam's seafood exports.
