An officer from Defense-Economic Unit 4 guides local people on how to plant and care for arrowroot. |
Gia Tong Thu, a farmer from Buoc Mu 2 village in Na Ngoi commune, Ky Son district, was supported by Defense-Economic Unit 4 with 100kg of arrowroot seeds and technical guidance for growing. In the first season, his family harvested nearly 10 tons of arrowroot. With the selling price ranging from VND 3,500 to 4,000 per kilogram, his family earned a stable income, improving their living conditions.
According to Major Le Van Thiet, Deputy head of Production Team 1, Defense-Economic Unit 4, in the area under his team's management alone, local people have planted more than 7 hectares of arrowroot, and this number is expected to grow due to its high profitability.
Apart from the arrowroot planting project, over the past years, Defense-Economic Unit 4 has implemented 25 construction projects with a total investment of VNA 104 billion, along with 39 livestock and crop production projects under the national target program; opened more than 39 refresher courses on science and technology, agriculture, and law to raise people’s awareness and help them apply acquired knowledge to economic development.
In the communes, model production programs such as rice, corn, turmeric, ginger, passion fruit cultivation, as well as livestock and poultry farming models, have helped locals increase productivity and create stable income sources. The effective methods of Defense-Economic Unit 4 have contributed to helping the local authorities in Ky Son and Que Phong districts reduce poverty.

Donation for people
We and troops from Production Team 1 of Defense-Economic Unit 4 traveled nearly 10km over a rugged, rocky road to visit the families of Vi Van Toan and Moong Bua Kham in Tang Phan village to inspect the flock of ducks presented by the team.
Major Le Van Thiet shared that in order to help the two families improve their living standards, the team members had contributed money to purchase 45 black ducks and mash, as well as sent troops to regularly visit the families to provide technical support on raising the ducks. Additionally, the team is also supporting the family of Vi Thi Mi in Tang Phan village. Ms. Mi's family has 11 children, all of whom are sick, some have passed away, some have left home to wander, and she is currently raising 3 children who are unable to work. Every month, the team contributes VND 300,000 from their production fund, and Major Le Van Thiet also personally donates VND 200,000 from his salary to help Mi’s family. The team has also coordinated with other forces to build a gratitude house for her family, to name but a few.

To mobilize the participation of all officials and party members, the Party Committee of Defense-Economic Unit 4 has issued a specialized resolution to lead the implementation of the breakthrough “Stick to villages, stick to people, coordinate with other forces in the area to help people in the project area to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty sustainably.” Agencies and units stationed in the area regularly help 35 poor households with livestock and crop seedlings, as well as technical support, thereby raising their living standards.
Meanwhile, the unit has implemented many typical projects, including “Warm houses in border areas,” “Paving the way to school for children,” “Warm coats in the winter” models. The unit has supported 20 disadvantaged students in border areas; presented gifts to policy beneficiaries, the elderly and ethnic minority people during national holidays and lunar New Year.
