Vietnam drafts law on participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations
PANO - The drafting committee of the law on participation in United Nations (U.N.) peacekeeping operations convened the first meeting on July 5 at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense under the chair of Deputy Defense Minister and head of the committee Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien.
At the event, delegates gave opinions about developing a plan and timeline for drafting the draft law and other contents, such as name of the law, applicability, and applicable subjects of the law.

Speaking at the meeting, Gen. Chien emphasized the importance and significance of building the draft law on participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations. He praised the drafting committee and the editorial team from the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations and relevant agencies and units for their efforts and commitment.
The deputy defense minister also highly appreciated agencies, ministries, and sectors for their constructive opinions related to the building of the draft law and stressed that the drafting process should closely adhere to the overall plan on Vietnam's participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations, approved by the Politburo and the plans of the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security regarding the Vietnamese forces' participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations during the 2014-2020 period and upcoming years.
At the event, Deputy Chief of the General Staff Sr. Lt. Gen. Phung Si Tan highlighted the importance of policies for the forces participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations since this is a difficult, challenging, and risky task. He also emphasized that the draft law must not only be coherent and comply with the Constitution and existing laws of Vietnam, but also align with international conventions and U.N. regulations.
