Nguyen Tam Chien, Chairman of the VUS said he hopes that Jackson’s return to Vietnam will help him understand more about the country.
Vietnam-US bilateral relations have reached new heights and developed in politics, economy, trade, culture and education. People-to-people exchanges between the two countries need to be further promoted, including war relief activities, Chien added.
He also hopes that cooperation between the VUS and US veterans will be accelerated in the future, helping to strengthen Vietnam-US relations.
In the meeting, Jackson said that he wants to meet and thank the people in Muong Gio commune of the northern province of Son La and warders of Hoa Lo prison, who treated him kindly during his detention.
Jackson’s plane was shot down in Muong Gio on June 24, 1972. He was arrested by local militia and then transferred to Hoa Lo prison in Hanoi. The former pilot then was returned to the US after the Paris Peace Accords on ending the war in Vietnam was signed on January 27, 1973.
