Sr. Lt. Gen. Vo Minh Luong addresses the event. |
The Central Highlands Front was tasked with building the Central Highlands into a theater of huge enemy destruction; hindering the regular U.S. - Saigon mobile force, creating conditions for forces in the delta and cities to uprise and at the same time, building a direct rear for the battlefield, being a firm base for the revolution of the South, building and protecting a strategic corridor linking the great Northern rear with the great Southern front-line.
From 1964 to 1975, the Central Highlands Front launched 10 major military operations, including three ones holding special significance, including the Pleime Operation in 1965 annihilating a U.S. battalion, seriously damaging another battalion of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st U.S. Airborne Division; the Northern Central Highlands Operation in 1972; and the Central Highlands Operation in 1975 during which the 2nd Army Corps and 2nd Military Region of Saigon military were destroyed and provinces in the Central Highlands were completely liberated, shaking the Southern Theater, creating a turning point in the war that led to the rapid collapse of the Saigon government.
