Building temporary bridges for local people

Due to the heaviest flood in the past 30 years, some residential areas in Muong Pon commune have been completely isolated. In order to transport food and other necessities for flood-hit people, dozens of temporary bridges have been built by troops of the Dien Bien provincial Military Command.

Although it stopped raining for two days, water still flows turbulently on a stream through Linh hamlet, Muong Pon commune. Temporary bridges made by troops before could not meet the traveling demands of local people. Therefore, it was necessary to build another temporary bridge with stone cage pillars, connecting National Highway 4H with Linh hamlet. Senior Captain Luu Chi Cuong from the Dien Bien provincial Military Command, together with other soldiers, surveyed the scene and then built the bridge.

Under the leadership of Senior Captain Cuong, dozens of officers and soldiers were quickly divided into groups to start the construction. After five hours, the bridge was gradually formed.

Tong Thi Dien, a local woman in Linh hamlet, held that the troops were so good at every task. Over the past days, they have not only brought food for the flood-hit people but also helped them clean up the environment and repair houses, then built a temporary bridge.

War veteran Luong Van Pan’s stilt house was degraded after many years, and severely damaged by flooding. Pan joined the military in 1976 and took part in the fight to protect national border areas in the Northern region in 1979. In 1981, he became an official in the locality and has been retired for 20 years. In recent years, Pan has been in difficult living conditions as his two children suddenly got serious illnesses. Pan and his wife are getting older, so when the flood came, he had to call upon troops and local authorities for help.

Under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Tran Cong Quyet, Deputy Head of Regiment 82, Division 355, Military Region 2, dozens of troops did their utmost to repair the house for Pan’s family. War veteran Pan shared that the troops have overcome difficulties to wholeheartedly support him and local people.

Colonel Nguyen Van Hoat, Commanding Officer of Regiment 82, noted that the unit has always educated troops about the difficulties of flood-hit people, thereby raising their awareness of responsibility to support the victims, contributing to beautifying the image of Uncle Ho’s soldiers.
