Sr. Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien speaks at the meeting. |
Sr. Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Defense Minister, Head of the Intersectoral Working Group and Head of the Ministry of National Defense’s Steering Board on Participation in U.N. Peacekeeping Operations, chaired the event.
In September 2024, the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations deployed the 63-member L2FH Rotation 6 to the U.N. Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the 184-strong Engineering Company Rotation 3 to the U.N. Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). Both units successfully completed their tenure and returned home safely.
Applauding their achievements, Gen. Chien affirmed that both units had excellently performed their duties and ensured absolute safety. He highlighted their mass mobilization work, helping enhance the image of the Vietnamese peacekeepers and Uncle Ho’s soldiers in international arena. He highly praised their professionalism, discipline, and regularity as well.
The defense leader emphasized that the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense would ask for the expansion of Vietnam’s participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations, both in scale and scope.
He urged the two units to build on their experience, maintain high responsibility, and continue promoting the image of Vietnamese blue-berets. He asked agencies and units to ensure proper policies, suitable positions for members of the two units, and pro-actively prepare qualified personnel for the 2025-2030 period.
During its working term, the Engineering Company Rotation 3 excellently completed a huge volume of work, including repairing and upgrading over 300 km of main supply routes, enabling safe travel of heavy vehicles at speeds of 80-90 km/h. The unit also applied K-31 soil-stabilization technology to reinforce a 27,215 sq.m airfield surface, improving durability and environmental performance, earning high praise from UNISFA leadership. They also built two large workshops in just three months, half time ahead the schedule, developed smart barracks, rescued over 200 heavy vehicles, and supported logistics operations across the mission area.
L2FH Rotation 6 also showed outstanding performance, providing treatment for 2,650 patients who are U.N. staff and local residents. Attentively, the hospital staff successfully handled complex cases, including a near-complete finger reattachment surgery for a Pakistani engineering soldier, which fully recovered and was commended by UNMISS leadership and featured in U.N. Headquarters news.
