The event was attended by Chief of the General Staff and Deputy Defense Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong.
At the event, delegates evaluated that over the past five years, under the direction of the Party Committee and Chain-of-Command of Military Region 4 and the steering committee, agencies, units, and localities have grasped and strictly implemented directives, resolutions, and decrees on defensive areas.

Military agencies at all level have advised local party committees and authorities to well carry out defense and security education on different subjects; organized refresher courses on defense and security for more than 335,000 people. The Defense and Security Education Council of Military Region 4 held tests at nine defense and security education centers, six provinces, 73 districts, and 83 communes. They have paid attention to strengthening unity and fostering economic development and social welfare and new-style rural area building.
Speaking at the conference, Gen. Cuong acknowledged and highly appreciated the results achieved by the steering committee over the past years. He requested the steering committee to continue to thoroughly grasp the Party's viewpoints, guidelines and State’s policies and laws regarding the implementation of the two strategic tasks of building and defending the Fatherland in the new situation; pro-actively coordinate to assess and accurately forecast the situation, thus giving advice to the local party committees and authorities to issue guidelines and policies to handle situations in a timely manner; enhance dissemination and education for the staff, party members, soldiers, people about the duty of building and defending the Fatherland in the new situation.

At the event, the steering board presented certificates of merits to ten collectives and 15 individuals with outstanding achievements in carrying out the decree over the past five years.
Later the same day, Sr. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Tan Cuong led the delegation to offer incense and flowers at Kim Lien Special National Relic Site in Nghe An’s Nam Dan district in commemoration of President Cho Chi Minh.
