General Son was also considered a symbol of the solidarity between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Communist Party of China, the two countries and the two militaries.
Thanks to his devotion during his 30-year revolutionary career, he has been recognized as a talented general in both political and military terms, an excellent military theorist, and a great contributor to the building the revolutionary militaries of Vietnam and China.
He was promoted to the rank of Major General in January 1948, one of the very first generals of the Vietnam People’s Army. In September 1955, he was promoted to the rank of Major General in the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Therefore, people of both countries called him the "general of two countries."
On this occasion, the general’s family handed over the Nguyen Son – Hong Thuy scholarships to five unprivileged students of the Chinese Faculty of the University of Hanoi.
