Rainy season in Abyei not only causes traffic congestion and hard travelling, but also leaves most of local schools submerged in mud. Downgraded classrooms built with wooden pillars and thatched roofs can easily collapse at any time after heavy rains. Children in the locality often study under trees or have their day-off due to heavy rains.

Vietnamese engineers build classrooms.

Knowing about the situation, the Vietnamese engineering company surveyed some schools in the locality, and started building classrooms at Abyei School for Boys and B. Koul Adol Intermediate School.

Non-commissioned Captain Kieu Van Thang from the Vietnamese engineering company noted that there are many children living in Abyei, and each school has more than 2,000 students. However, there are not enough classrooms, and most of them are seriously degraded. “Right after receiving the information, we immediately conducted a survey and set plans to start building new classrooms as quickly as possible so that students could go to school.”

Reportedly, each classroom is built on an area of about 60 sq.m. The cost for the construction was donated by humanitarian aids from a mission of the inter-sectoral working group for Vietnam’s participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations who had just visited the Vietnamese engineering force performing peacekeeping missions in UNISFA in June 2024. The company also took advantage of available materials to build classrooms. The construction is scheduled to complete in August.

Vice Principal of B. Koul Adol Intermediate School Tong Emmanuel Deng shared that the new classrooms will create favorable conditions for students during their study. Especially, in such weather conditions, the school can be easily submerged in mud after heavy rains; therefore, the support from the Vietnamese side would provide safe studying places for students.

In addition, the engineering troops also repaired two boats for Mijak community in Abyei. During the rainy season, iron boats are the means of transport of local people. However, they were both degraded. The Vietnamese force had to repair and renew the boats for them.
