VNDPKO Director Major General Hoang Kim Phung told the U.N. Under Secretary General about the establishment and development of the department, as well as the first activities of Vietnam’s participation in U.N. missions, especially the first time Vietnam sent two female officers to the U.N. Mission in South Sudan.
On this occasion, Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix toured the unit and was briefed on the department’s task and its outcomes in participating in peacekeeping operations.

According to Major General Hoang Kim Phung, Vietnam is committed itself to maintaining the percentage of women participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations (accounting for 20% as regulated by the U.N.) and meeting all criteria of the U.N. by 2028.

He also expressed his delight at the visit to the VNDPKO, highlighting that VNDPKO has closely worked with international partners to successfully organize refresher courses on peacekeeping operations, on the way to become a regional-class training center on peacekeeping. In addition, the unit has also partnered with the U.N. in building facilities, raising capability, experience sharing in this field.

The U.N. Under Secretary General once again hailed the great efforts of Vietnam, from a war victim to become a country with an increasingly important role in the region and the world, contributing to maintaining peace and security. “I visited Abyei and South Sudan, where the Vietnam peacekeeping forces are stationed, and witnessed their contributions to help local people,” he added.

He expressed his hope that the cooperation between the U.N. and Vietnam in this field would be further promoted, and Vietnam, especially the female officers, would make active contributions to the U.N. peacekeeping operations.
