More large-scale projects have been seen in Danang City

Viet Nam has begun a process of decentralisation, giving more power to local authorities in developing their economies, according to a Ministry of Planning and Investment official.

At a forum on provincial-level economic management held in Ha Noi on November 15, Director of the Ministry’s Department for Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises Development Nguyen Van Trung said Viet Nam has made much progress in decentralisation compared to other countries.

Research Director of the Fulbright Economics Teaching Programme and consulting expert to the Viet Nam Competitiveness Initiative Project (VNCI) Vu Thanh Tu Anh said that decentralisation had been welcomed in all pilot provinces of Ha Tay, Vinh Phuc, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Khanh Hoa, Binh Duong and Tien Giang as local authorities got more power to make decisions.

He said these provinces worked out plans to further decentralisation to districts and communes, encouraging them to attract investment in line with their own advantages.

The forum was jointly held by the Department for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Development and a number of international organisations.
