Huge bomb found near Long Bien bridge safely handled
PANO - The Technology Center for Bomb and Mine Disposal (BOMICEN) under the Engineering Corps on October 20 safely handled a 3,000 pound bomb found in Long Bien Bridge area in Hanoi on October 10.
According to Senior Colonel Nguyen Dang Chien, Head of the Political Education and Training Division under the Engineering Corps, functional forces found a M118 bomb weighing 3,000 pounds located some 20m downstream from Long Bien Bridge. Initial checking showed that the bomb’s fuse was intact with explosives inside, and if not discovered and handled promptly, it could threaten people's lives and property.

Tasked by the Ministry of National Defense’s leaders, Engineering Corps assigned BOMICEN with experienced engineers to study the bomb and to handle it safely.

After thorough preparation, the center defused the bomb safely. The bomb shell free from explosives was handed over to the Hanoi Capital Command for management and display as a war remnant.

In 2004, BOMICEN handled the biggest bomb (weighing 5.5 tons) in Indochina dropped by the U.S. troops, which was found in Ia Kha commune, Ia Grai district, Gia Lai province.
