Due to harsh socio-economic conditions, low education levels, and outdated farming techniques, many border people in Ky Son and Que Phong district, Nghe An province were struggling to escape poverty.

To help them, Defense-Economic Unit 4 of Military Region 4 provided them with crops and livestock which were suitable to the local conditions.

With support from the soldiers, Lo Van Thang’s family in Long Thang village, Hanh Dich commune, Que Phong district overcame poverty. Thang shared that they used to rely on upland rice with low yields, making life very difficult. Thanks to the soldiers’ instruction on raising buffaloes, cows, ducks, carps, and growing vegetables, their lives have gradually stabilized, and my children can now go to school.

Not only Lo Van Thang’s family, but thousands of households in the Ky Son Defense-Economic region have also received support from Defense-Economic Unit 4. With their assistance, many families have successfully applied agricultural models such as wet rice cultivation, lemongrass, Shan Tuyet tea, Lao squash, watermelon, and livestock farming, including Boer goats, Lai Sind cattle, among others, gradually having stable incomes and improving their lives.

In addition, the soldiers have also opened literacy classes for local people. After six months of attending one such class, Luong Thi Huong from Kem Don village, Tri Le commune, Que Phong district held that thanks to the soldiers and young volunteers from the defense-economic unit, she can calculate prices at the market, understand TV programs better, and even read newspapers to learn about new ways to develop economy.

Over the past years, Defense-Economic Unit 4 has built 25 public infrastructure projects worth over VND 104 billion and implemented 39 agricultural and livestock projects benefiting more than 2,200 households with an investment of over VND 48 billion. The unit has also supported 65 especially poor households, taken care of disabled and elderly individuals, opened five literacy classes, and assisted 49 poor students with monthly allowance of VND 300,000 - 500,000 each, and presented many gifts to help them.
