At the ceremony, 60 border troops from 44 provinces and cities nationwide, who contributed significantly to national education cause, were honored. Among the honored, the oldest officer was Senior Colonel Nguyen Huu Phuc, a 53-year-old officer from the Dak Lak provincial Border Guard Command, while the youngest one was Nguyen Hoang Tam, a 23-year-old soldier from Tuyen Binh Border Station of the Long An provincial Border Guard Command. Notably, Lieutenant Colonel Mai Van Son from Hai Van Border Station of the Da Nang municipal Border Guard Command spent nearly 26 years of his life-teaching locals in the area.

The honored this time are outstanding individuals of the program “Helping children go to school” launched by the Vietnam Border Guard Command in 2014. The program has so far supported 2,633 students, including 59 Lao and 67 Cambodian nationals, and taken care of 17 students at border stations. The program encouraged students to overcome hardships to achieve high academic records as well as to become good children both at home and in society.

Addressing the ceremony, Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilization Truong Thi Mai applauded the youth movements under the direction of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee and the Vietnam Youth Association. The initiative of the honoring program was meaningful in that it encouraged and supported teachers, including border troops, to voluntarily do their teaching mission in disadvantaged areas, she added.

At the event, Mrs. Mai and First Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee Le Quoc Phong handed over certificates of merit to outstanding border officers and soldiers.

Also at the program, Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha gave his ministry’s certificates of merit to 60 border teachers and 30 disadvantaged students.
