Vietnamese rescue forces ready to search for earthquake victims in Myanmar
PANO - After landing at Yangon International Airport on March 30 evening, Vietnam’s rescue forces immediately proceeded to Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar, nearly 500km from the airport, to assist in earthquake recovery efforts. They arrived there at around 3 a.m. on March 31.
According to Major General Pham Van Ty, Deputy Chief of the Standing Office of the National Committee for Incident, Disaster Response, and Search and Rescue, Deputy Director of the General Staff’s Search and Rescue Department, and Chief of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA)’s rescue forces in Myanmar, on March 31 morning, the contingent will meet with Myanmar’s coordination committee to finalize arrangements for the search and rescue operations.

The delegation will travel to Mandalay, which is some 200km from Naypyidaw and the epicenter of the earthquake. It suffers heavy casualties and has many victims struck in the ruins.
Gen. Ty said that, upon arrival in Mandalay, the rescue contingent will quickly establish accommodation, conduct field trips, and start the SAR work. The VPA forces will be divided into three teams, each taking a different direction, working with the utmost urgency to minimize losses and suffering of the people of Myanmar.
With high determination, the rescue forces from the Ministries of National Defense and Public Security of Vietnam stay ready to undertake and carry out the mission, said Gen. Ty.
