Vietnam, UK strengthen defense ties
PANO - Senior Lieutenant General Pham Ngoc Minh suggested Vietnam and the UK promote all-level visits and delegation exchanges, supplement and upgrade the current cooperative mechanism, consider the establishment of a defense policy dialogue mechanism at the deputy defense ministerial level and further improve competence of the bilateral working group on defense cooperation.
General Minh, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, made the above suggestion during a reception on November 6 at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense for a visiting delegation of the Department of International Policy and Plans under the UK Ministry of Defense, led by its director - Brigadier General Stephen McMahon, who co-chaired the fifth meeting of the bilateral working group on Vietnam-UK defense ties.

According to General Minh, the success of the suggested work would contribute to lifting the Vietnam-UK bilateral defense ties to a higher level, so as to serve as a pillar of the two countries’ strategic partnership.
The Vietnamese general highly valued the outcomes of the fifth meeting of the bilateral working group on Vietnam-UK defense ties, which took place earlier the same day. He believed that the two sides have mapped out practical and effective measures to contribute to reinforcing the bilateral defense ties in 2018 in accordance with both sides’ ability and goodwill in the framework of the strategic partnership.
Regarding UN peacekeeping operations, General Minh thanked the UK for its trust and for transferring its level-two field hospital in South Sudan to Vietnam. He asked the UK side to continue providing in-depth English language training for Vietnamese officers to work at the field hospital.
Agreeing with General Minh’s suggestions, Brigadier General McMahon congratulated Vietnam on preparing to deploy a large peacekeeping force to South Sudan and affirmed that the UK side will continue to support Vietnam in the field, including English language training for Vietnamese officers.
