Vietnam, Canada expand defense cooperation
PANO – Vietnam treasures its relationship with Canada and is ready to establish a defense policy dialogue mechanism at the deputy ministerial level with Canada.
Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, member of the Central Party Committee, permanent member of the Central Military Commission and Deputy Defense Minister, made the statement at the reception for Major General Derek Joyce, Director of International Security Policy of Canada’s Department of National Defense, in Hanoi on January 24.

The Vietnamese Deputy Defense Minister emphasized that there remains much room to develop the Vietnam-Canada bilateral defense ties and pointed out that the two countries should foster defense cooperation, especially in personnel training, war consequence relief, UN peacekeeping operations and defense industry, contributing to strengthening national defense and security of each country and to maintaining peace in the Asia-Pacific region.
Vinh affirmed that Vietnam supports Canada’s participation in the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+).
At the reception, Major General Derek Joyce informed the host of the outcomes of his working session with the Vietnamese Defense Ministry’s Foreign Relations Department. He highlighted positive achievements in Vietnam-Canada defense cooperation over the past time and thanked Vietnam for its support.
He stressed that Canada always wants to participate in the ADMM+ mechanism.
