At the meeting, the two heads of delegation affirmed that defense cooperation between Vietnam and Canada has received due attention by both states and militaries, constantly developed and become one of the key pillars of bilateral friendship and cooperation. They underlined that bilateral defense ties is conducted on the basis of equality and mutual respect, contributing to strengthening defense and security, safeguarding independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of each country, and upholding an environment of peace, stability and development.

The two sides also briefed each other on recent achievements of their institution, and exchanged experience in management, education and training, and scientific research.

Vietnam and Canada established diplomatic relations in 1973. Bilateral ties had been steadily strengthened and were elevated to a comprehensive partnership in 2017, with strong cooperation development across such fields as politics - diplomacy, economy - trade, defense - security, culture - education, science - technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

In recent years, bilateral defense ties have been actively promoted, especially since the third Vietnam - Canada defense policy dialogue in February 2025. Notable results have been recorded in all-level delegation exchanges, dialogue and consultation mechanisms, training, U.N. peacekeeping, defense industry, war legacy settlement, border management, and coordination at multilateral mechanisms and international forums.

An overview of the working session

Canada has an advanced and modern military education system and extensive experience in U.N. peacekeeping operations. Vietnam highly values Canada’s support and cooperation, particularly through the Military Training and Cooperation Program (MTCP).

These practical cooperation activities have significantly contributed to deepening and expanding the comprehensive partnership between the two countries, for the benefit and development of the two peoples.
