GS chief receives Lao counterpart
PANO - On March 9, Chief of the General Staff (GS) and Deputy Defense Minister General Nguyen Tan Cuong received his visiting Lao counterpart Senior Lieutenant General Saichay Kommasith at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense.
Gen. Cuong assessed that the bilateral defense cooperation has continued to be implemented comprehensively, extensively and substantively. The two militaries have taken the lead in implementing the orientations agreed upon by the senior leaders of the two countries, helping maintain and strengthen an environment of peace and stability for each country’s development.

The host suggested the two sides continue to effectively implement the agreed cooperation contents, focusing on enhancing high-level delegation exchanges, maintaining the effectiveness of consultation and dialogue mechanisms, especially the Deputy Minister-level Defense Policy Dialogue. He also suggested coordination to successfully organize the annual meeting among the three Ministers of National Defense of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and a joint exercise among the three militaries on responding to non-traditional security challenges, and strengthening cooperation in border and border marker management and protection.
Gen. Cuong invited senior leaders of the Lao Ministry of National Defense, the Lao People’s Army, and Lao defense enterprises to attend and display products at the Vietnam Defense Expo 2026.

For his part, Senior Lieutenant General Saichay Kommasith highly appreciated the results of bilateral defense ties over the past time and expressed strong agreement with the proposed areas of cooperation put forward by his Vietnamese counterpart. He expressed his hope that both sides will continue coordinating to implement the agreed defense cooperation contents, thereby further deepening the relationship between the two militaries in particular and the two countries in general.
