According to VNDPKO Deputy Director Senior Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh, the UNMO course is designed to equip trainees with the professional knowledge and essential skills required to be deployed and successfully perform their duties as U.N. Military Observers, as well as other related assignments in U.N. peacekeeping missions.
Hosted by Vietnam, the UNMO course is delivered by an experienced team of Vietnamese U.N. peacekeeping officers. The successful organization of the course will further demonstrate the prestige, status, professionalism, and capacity of the VNDPKO in conducting advanced international training programs and developing a contingent of highly qualified instructors.
During the course, trainees will receive comprehensive instruction on the principles, policies, and operational procedures of U.N. peacekeeping, while developing the practical competencies required of a U.N. military observer.

The training program covers key subjects, including the tasks and structure of U.N. peacekeeping operations; the roles and responsibilities of U.N. military observers; International Humanitarian Law; human rights; cultural awareness; negotiation and mediation; patrol planning; observation and reporting; safety and security; and leadership skills in multinational operational environments.
Speaking at the event, Colonel Nguyen Phuc Dong, Head of the instructor team, underlined that the role of U.N. military observers is becoming increasingly demanding. As the “eyes and ears” of a mission, UNMOs often operate in challenging environments that require professionalism, impartiality, and sound judgment. Through these responsibilities, UNMOs help build confidence among the parties, prevent the escalation of conflict, and support missions in effectively implementing their tasks.

Col. Dong added that the instructors would share practical knowledge, operational experience, and lessons learned from their own deployments in U.N. peacekeeping missions. During the course, trainees will undertake realistic field-oriented training scenarios and receive guidance from the instructors to develop the competencies expected of professional U.N. military observers.
