Sr. Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien chairs the ceremony to hand over the President’s decisions to five officers to undertake U.N. peacekeeping duties.

The event was chaired by Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Defense Minister, Head of the Inter-sectoral Working Group, and Head of the MND’s Steering Committee for the Participation in U.N. Peacekeeping Operations.  

Of the five officers, four will be sent to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) to undertake duties as operation staff officer, intelligence staff officers, and supply staff officer. One officer will take on the duty as an operation staff officer at the U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Speaking at the event, Gen. Chien expressed delight at the outcomes obtained by comrades who have finished their duties at U.N. missions. According to him, of 83 officers who have completed their duties at U.N. missions, 25 were presented with certificates of merits. The deputy defense minister believed that the five officers will continue to uphold the tradition of the military and the Vietnamese peacekeeping force and show their stance and competence to excellently complete assigned tasks, contributing to popularizing the image of Vietnam, its people, and military to international friends.

He asked the officers to strictly follow local situations to well perform assigned duties; thoroughly grasp and strictly carry out the Party, State, and military’s foreign policies; well observe military discipline, and the United Nations’ regulations, laws of the host countries, and guidelines of relevant authorities and the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations; demonstrate courage and competence, promote unity, and strengthen solidarity with local people.

Gen. Chien asked the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations to develop a suitable road-map to raise command of foreign languages for forces to participate in U.N. peacekeeping operations.

According to Senior Colonel Pham Manh Thang, Director of Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Vietnam has sent 792 officers and employees (including 785 military and seven public security officers) to U.N. peacekeeping missions and headquarters.
