The Vietnamese defense minister also showed his sympathy for the difficulties that the Indonesian government and people have faced since the COVID-19 pandemic first broke out. He spoke highly of the contributions of the Indonesian armed forces to the joint efforts of the Indonesian government in fighting the pandemic and maintaining national security.
General Giang took the occasion to thank the Indonesian side for supporting Vietnam as the 2020 ASEAN Chair and a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2020 – 2021 tenure. He highly valued Indonesia’s position and role as well as its active and proactive participation in promoting ASEAN collaboration, contributing to strengthening the internal solidarity and improving the bloc’s stature in the regional and global arena.
For his part, Ambassador Denny Abdi congratulated General Giang on his new post as Vietnamese minister of national defense and his rank promotion to general. He hoped that General Giang will continue making significant contributions to fostering the bilateral defense ties in particular and the strategic partnership between the two countries in general. He pledged to put forth his utmost efforts to contribute to developing the defense relations between Indonesia and Vietnam. Also, he praised the efforts and effectiveness of Vietnam’s COVID-19 prevention and control.
The two sides shared the view that bilateral ties between the two militaries have been deepened with practical results in several fields such as the exchange of delegations, training and naval cooperation, especially since the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on enhancing cooperation among defense officials and relevant activities in October 2010, and a joint vision statement between the two defense ministries for the 2017-2022 period.
Due to the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two sides agreed to hold online consultations and dialogues while reinforcing cooperation between law enforcement forces at sea to effectively address arising matters, especially issues related to fishermen.
