The talks took place right after a welcome ceremony for a high-ranking delegation of the Royal Cambodia Navy, led by its chief Admiral Tea Sokha, who is also Secretary-General of Cambodia’s National Committee for Maritime Security.

During the talks, Vice Admiral Tran Thanh Nghiem warmly welcomed the Cambodian delegation to visit the Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN). He stressed that Vietnam and Cambodia are neighbors having time-honored friendship which has been constantly consolidated and promoted.

According to the Vietnamese naval chief, in recent years, bilateral defense cooperation between the two countries has achieved positive results. In addition, Vietnam - Cambodia cooperation mechanisms have developed robustly. He emphasized that naval cooperation has always been a highlight in the bilateral defense relations.

The two sides have expanded their collaboration in various areas, including delegation exchanges, training, and logistics-technical assistance. The joint patrol mechanism has  played a part in maintaining security and order in the historical waters and adjacent maritime areas between the two countries, making an active contribution to peace, stability, and development in each country, the region and the world.

To further promote cooperation between the two navies in the coming time, Vice Admiral Tran Thanh Nghiem proposed maintaining delegation exchanges at all levels to enhance mutual understanding and trust; and continuing to effectively implement the joint maritime patrol coordination regulations. Both sides should also study a mechanism for information exchange on fishermen violating each other’s waters to ensure timely and humanitarian handling.

Regarding personnel training, the Vietnamese naval chief assigned the Naval Academy and the Naval Technical College to continue receiving Cambodian naval officers and cadets for training according to agreed quotas.

Expressing his delight at visiting and working at the VPA Command, Admiral Tea Sokha sincerely thanked the Vietnamese Navy for the respectful and thoughtful reception. He also expressed deep gratitude for the selfless assistance and sacrifices of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and advisors to help Cambodia liberate the country from the past genocidal regime. The Cambodian naval chief affirmed his desire to continue promoting effective and practical cooperation activities.

An overview of the talks

On the evening the same day, the Chief of the VPN hosted a banquet for the Cambodian delegation.

During their visit to Vietnam, the Cambodian delegation will visit Brigade 679 of Naval Region 1 Command and tour some historical relic sites in Hai Phong and Hanoi.
