The event was attended by former Deputy Defense Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Rinh. Deputy Chief of the General Staff Sr. Lt. Gen. Phung Si Tan attended and spoke at the seminar.
In his opening speech, Director of the Institute of Military History Major General Nguyen Hoang Nhien said that half a century ago, units under Division 2 of Military Region 5, Division 304, Division 324 of Army Corps 2 coordinated with local armed forces and people of Quang Nam province to open Nong Son - Thuong Duc Campaign and won a glorious victory.

The Nong Son - Thuong Duc Victory affirmed the sound leadership of the Central Military Commission and the General Staff and proved the remarkable maturity of the regular troops and the armed forces on the Military Region 5 theater in a joint operation. It served as a practical basis for the Politburo, the Central Military Commission, and the General Staff to complete the strategic plan to liberate the South and reunify the nation.

At the event, the organizing panel received around 60 reports from generals, leaders of agencies and units of the Ministry of National Defense, historical witnesses, scientists inside and outside the military. Reports affirmed that the sound leadership of the Party was the decisive factor in the success of the Resistance War against U.S. imperialists in general and the Nong Son - Thuong Duc Campaign in particular in 1974. It clarified the art of commanding, organizing, and directing the campaign, especially promoting the role of the people's warfare and the national unity to create great strength to win. Delegates also highlighted the role of the local party committees, the close coordination between the regular troops and the local armed forces. They also laid stress on Vietnam’s military art, which was flexibly used in the campaign and can be applied to the current Fatherland protection and defense cause.

Addressing the event, Sr. Lt. Gen. Phung Si Tan stated that reports and opinions at the event provided more evidence to further affirm the significance of the victory to the Resistance War against U.S. imperialists in particular and the Vietnamese revolution in general; analyze and clarify the fundamental factors that led to the success of Nong Son - Thuong Duc.
The seminar was an event to honor the contribution of troops and people to the victory; educate young people on revolutionary ideals, patriotic traditions, national pride, and dignity; encourage and motivate people, especially the younger generation, to follow the example of the previous generations, to study, work, and dedicate their strength and wisdom to building the homeland and the country; draw valuable lessons for the Fatherland protection and defense cause.
