Attending the ceremony in Dat Mui commune, Ca Mau province, Defense Minister General Phan Van Giang emphasized the province’s strategic position in terms of both socio-economic development and national defense.
He highlighted the important significance of these projects since they will complete the North - South Expressway link to the southernmost place of the country, connect Hon Khoai Island to the mainland, and realize the strategy of developing Hon Khoai into the “Southern continental outpost” of the country.
Following the Prime Minister’s direction, military construction units have been tasked with rapid deployment under the motto of “three determinations” focusing on schedule, quality, application of advanced technology and safety and “three readinesses” in resources, continuous work, and all-round logistics and technical support. The goal is to finish the expressway by December 31, 2028, and complete the Hon Khoai road and port by mid-2029.
Ca Mau - Dat Mui Expressway stretches nearly 93 km, divided into Ca Mau - Cai Nuoc (42km) and Cai Nuoc - Dat Mui (over 50 km) sections. It has four lanes, and is expected to be completed in the 2025 - 2028 period.
Hon Khoai route is 18km long in total, including a 17km sea-crossing bridge, the longest in Southeast Asia. With four lanes, the route is designed for vehicles at the speed of 80 km/h. It is expected to become a symbolic landmark for Vietnam.
Meanwhile, Hon Khoai Port is dual-use, invested by the Naval Service and has an annual capacity of 20 million tons, receiving ships up to 250,000 DWT.
These projects will form a strategic transport infrastructure system, serving as a driving force for breakthrough development in Ca Mau province and the Mekong Delta.
