First English Olympiad for military schools kicked off
PANO – The General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army opened the first English Olympiad for military schools at the Military Technical Academy on November 13.
The event saw the presence of Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang, Member of the Party Central Committee, Permanent Member of the Central Military Commission, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and Deputy Defense Minister.
Lieutenant General Tran Huu Phuc, Head of the Department of Defense School Management under the General Staff, said that the Olympiad attracted 18 teams with nearly 200 members from officers’ training schools across the whole army.
Accordingly, the contestants will be divided into three groups to compete in two categories for individuals (listening, speaking, reading and writing skills) and collectives (introduction and eloquence) until November 16. The two best teams in each group will join the final round on November 17.
Addressing the ceremony, General Giang applauded relevant agencies’ preparations for the competition and affirmed that the Olympiad is one of practical programs in response to Directive 89/CT-BQP of the Defense Minister on improving foreign language teaching and learning quality in army schools. Particularly, the contest aims to evaluate outcomes of teaching and studying English at military schools.
He also underlined the importance of studying foreign languages in helping soldiers improve their competency to contribute to the development of the army and the country.
The general encouraged the competitors to strive for the highest results, while asking the organizing panel and the jury board to effectively run the competition and mark exams exactly and fairly to make the competition equitable and successful.
