At the meeting, Gen. Cuong acknowledged the practical and effective outcomes of the bilateral defense cooperation in recent years, based on the Memorandum of Understanding on defense cooperation in 2010 and the Joint Vision Statement on enhancing defense cooperation in 2018.

He highlighted key areas of progress such as delegation exchanges; dialogues and consultations; training; U.N. peacekeeping; exchanges between arms and services; war legacy relief; and multilateral defense cooperation, particularly within the framework of ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+).
Air Marshal Stephen Chappell extended condolences over the loss of life and property caused by the recent storms in Vietnam. He briefed the host upon the outcomes of his earlier talks with Major General Vu Hong Son, Commander of the Air Defense - Air Force Service. He noted that the talks yielded substantive and positive results, creating conditions for the two air forces to further cooperate. He suggested Australia and Vietnam continue to enhance defense ties, focusing on training, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, military medicine, and search and rescue.

Gen. Cuong expressed satisfaction with the results of the talks, noting that air force cooperation has gained encouraging achievements and holds great potential for further development.
The Vietnamese defense leader stressed that under the direction of the two countries’ senior leaders and defense ministries, the Vietnam People’s Army and Australian Defense Force would continue to deepen cooperation between their services and arms, in ways that align with each side’s needs, capabilities, and mutual interests.
He also affirmed that the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense supports stronger ties between the two air forces, encouraging more delegation exchanges, training cooperation, and sharing of professional experience. He expressed his hope that the leadership of Australia’s Department of Defense, defense force and air force, and defense enterprises will continue supporting future editions of the Vietnam Defense Expo.

Earlier the same day, Commander of the Air Defense - Air Force Service Major General Vu Hong Son held talks with Air Marshal Stephen Chappell in Hanoi. Both sides agreed to maintain all-level delegation exchanges, strengthen cooperation in education and training, and consider organizing professional workshops to share experience in areas of mutual interest such as flight safety and air rescue operations.
