Chief of the General Staff and Deputy Defense Minister General Nguyen Tan Cuong said that during the meeting with Admiral David Lance Johnston, Chief of the Australian Defense Force, on April 23 at the Headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense.

The Vietnamese defense leader stressed that the elevation of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in March 2024 was a significant milestone, facilitating the deeper collaboration in different fields, particularly in defense.

General Cuong highly appreciated the outcomes in bilateral defense cooperation over the past time, especially in training, United Nations peacekeeping operations, and military medicine. He suggested both sides continue to effectively implement their agreed cooperation contents, with a focus on increasing delegation exchanges, dialogue and consultation mechanisms, training, U.N. peacekeeping operations, collaboration among arms and services.

The Chief of the General Staff also stressed the importance of effective coordination at multilateral forums, particularly within the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) framework.

For his part, Admiral Johnston highlighted the continuous development of the two countries' relations, including defense cooperation. He hoped that the bilateral defense cooperation would further thrive, including new cooperation initiatives that align with the needs and capabilities of each country.
