At the event

The event, themed “Effective Ocean Governance for Regional Partnership and Stability” was chaired by Flag Officer-in-Command of the Philippine Navy Adeluis S Bordado. It drew the participation of naval chiefs/head delegates, and representatives of 20 WPNS members.

In his opening remarks, Flag Officer-in-Command of the Philippine Navy Adeluis S Bordado stressed that WPNS aims to boost cooperative activities and address tensions affecting relations between nations, and challenges related to terrorism, smuggling, illegal fishing, and maritime security activities.

With joint efforts of member countries and observers, the cooperation contents within WPNS framework have become more diverse. In addition, the scope and field of cooperation have been ceaselessly expanding while the strategic trust has been strengthened based on the principle of effective dialogue and cooperation among nations in the Western Pacific region.

During the event, the participants considered the Fiji Navy’s application to join the WPNS (with all 20 “yes” votes), discussed commitments to host future activities within the WPNS framework. They also considered criteria for navies of the observer countries to become full members of the WPNS.

The plenary session of the symposium is scheduled to take place on October 27.
