The event was co-chaired by Military Region 2’s Commander Major General Pham Hong Chuong and Commanding Officer of Division 2 of the Laos People’s Army Colonel Khamdy Xayyavong.

At the event, the delegates evaluated that over the past time, Military Region 2 of Vietnam and Lao military units in the North, including Division 2, Division 3, Non-commissioned Officer School No.1 and provincial military commands of Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Houaphanh, Xayabury, Xiangkhouang, Phongsaly, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay, have well carried out the memorandum of understanding signed at the conference in January, 2021.

Notably, the two sides have closely cooperated to well manage and protect the borderline, border markers, and border gates and conduct joint patrols. They have regularly exchanged information and worked together to ensure security and public order in border areas, combat drug-related crime, and deal with illegal border crossing cases.

Military Region 2 and Lao military units in the North have actively disseminated laws and border management regulations to local people, contributing to building a shared borderline of peace, friendship, stability, and comprehensive development. Cooperation in human resource training and search, collection, and repatriation of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and military advisors who laid down their lives in Laos’ localities in the North during wartime have been paid special attention to.

The two sides have worked together to help local authorities and people to build political bases and fix projects in villages, hold twinning activities, and assist localities and military units in the northern region of Laos to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

2022 has been selected to be the “Vietnam - Laos, Laos -Vietnam Friendship Year” to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic ties of the two countries (September 5, 1962 - 2022) and 45 years of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (July 18, 1977 - 2022).

In response to the year, Military Region 2 of the Vietnam People’s Army and Lao military units in the North have thoroughly studied foreign policies of the two parties, two states, and two militaries and accelerated activities to disseminate and further boost the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos. 

The two sides have fostered collaboration to firmly protect political security and created favorable conditions for socio-economic development in their localities while fostering information exchange and working together to effectively deal with circumstances. They have effectively cooperated in education and training; search, collection, and repatriation of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and military advisors who laid down their lives in Laos’ localities in the North during wartime; natural disaster mitigation and search and rescue.
