Implementing the instruction of the inter-sectoral working group for Vietnam’s participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations, led by Deputy Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Pham Truong Son, during its inspection last June, Vietnam's Engineering Company Rotation 2 planned to build classrooms for Abyei School for Boys and B. Koul Adol Inter-level School (primary and secondary).

The funds for the construction of these classrooms were contributed by members of the working group after witnessing the poor learning conditions and facilities of the schools. Vietnam’s Engineering Company Rotation 2 then were assigned to quickly built solid classes to help the schools maintain classes during the rainy season.

Each classroom covers an area of 60 square meters, designed to be suitable for the terrain characteristics of each school. In Abyei, construction materials are very rare; therefore, the company made use of surplus materials from construction sites and materials available in the unit, such as cement, iron, corrugated iron, etc., and bought bricks from local people.

In the rainy season, residents in Abyei always experience traffic congestion and traveling difficulty and most of the schools are deep in mud. Classrooms are built with wooden pillars, bamboo walls, and roofs made from intertwined grass, which can collapse at any time after a heavy rain. Therefore, during the rainy season, students often have to stay at home for days, as there are no classrooms in good conditions.

Having learned about the situation, Vietnam’s Engineering Company Rotation 2 conducted a survey to build new classrooms. After three weeks, the classrooms were completed, each big enough for more than 80 students per class.

Tong Emmanuel Deng, Vice Headmaster of B. Koul Adol Inter-level School, shared that the new classrooms create better conditions for students to study, especially in current weather conditions that after a downpour, the whole school is flooded and covered in mud.

On September 24, before returning to Vietnam, the Engineering Company Rotation 2 held a ceremony to hand over new classrooms to Abyei School for Boys and B. Koul Adol Inter-level School.

According to a representative of the educational sector in Abyei, for them, financial support could not be compared to a concrete action. Vietnam’s activities over the past time have helped people in Abyei a lot, especially in education. These activities have given hope for a better future to the community and every person in Abyei.

Earlier, during the inspection of inter-sectoral working group for Vietnam’s participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations in last June, the group handed over two classes, a kitchen and many gifts to E.C.S.S Nyinkuac Primary School.
