The launch confirmed that Apple Watch can use eSim to connect to mobile networks in Vietnam, without depending on an iPhone. In the past, Apple Watch had to connect with iPhone via Bluetooth.
Earlier, in February of this year, Viettel made a surprise when becoming the first eSim provider in Vietnam for the iPhone. This important step enabled Viettel to be the first operator in Vietnam to provide the eSim service and to distribute the Apple Watch series via the Vietnam Store.
Addressing the press conference on the launch of the eSim service, Nguyen Trong Tinh, Deputy CEO of Viettel Telecom said that with eSIM on Apple Watch, users can be directly connected without turning on Bluetooth on their iPhone. It means that users can answer calls, look up maps, and stream music right on their Apple Watch without bringing along an iPhone.
Viettel has been implementing eSim technology on mobile phones since February of this year. Instead of requiring a physical SIM card, this technology allows a chip acting as a SIM to be implanted into the device during production. To use eSIM, users just have to activate the network operator’s service.
In Vietnam, Viettel is the best operator of eSIM for iPhone. At present, 70,000 Viettel’s subscribers are using eSIM on their iPhone.
Viettel plans to further provide its eSIM service for other wearable devices, phones, smart tablets, such as Xiaomi smart phones, the Smart Watch series of Samsung, and Laptop Windows.
Normally, it costs VND 150,000 to activate eSIM on Apple Watch and the maintenance cost is VND 25,000 per month.
On the occasion of the launch of e-SIM on Apple Watch, Viettel offers its clients free activation of e-SIM and free services for six months. Besides, Viettel’s customers who are familiar members of Viettel++ will receive another six months of service free when exchanging preferential voucher on Viettel ++ for 5,000 points of consumption.
