Over the past years, with funding from both central and local sources, along with the attention and care from various levels of government, sectors, and forces stationed in the locality, the face of Ia Dom border commune in Duc Co district has changed significantly. The socio-economic situation has developed; social security has been ensured; and the cultural standard of ethnic minority people in border areas has been steadily enhanced. To date, all the households have access to the national electricity grid; schools have been built with solid infrastructure, providing enough classrooms for students and accommodation for teachers. The medical station has been built and the transportation system has been upgraded, creating favorable conditions for travel and the production activities of people.
However, local people are still facing many difficulties, as the rate of ethnic minorities is high, and the awareness of some is still limited. Labor productivity is low, and the economy is developing slowly. Due to the specific nature of the border commune, the population is unevenly distributed and far from the commune’s administrative center. Attentively, many villages are located tens of kilometers away from the center; travelling is difficult, so many students drop out of school.
Knowing about the situation, the Border Post of Le Thanh International Border Gate has conducted a mass mobilization model to contribute to efforts to build a new-style rural area and support disadvantaged students in border areas. On April 1, 2013, the Party Committee of the Border Post of Le Thanh International Border Gate deployed the model “Love Kitchen” for students in the locality.
Since 2013, the working group of the border post has coordinated with local authorities of Ia Dom commune, other units and schools in the locality to encourage needy families or those living far from the center to allow their children to come to the unit for eating and resting after school in the morning.
In addition, on special occasions such as the lunar New Year, the opening of the new school academic year, and the end-of-year ceremonies, the unit has allocated funds from its budget to grant scholarships to and honored outstanding students. The unit has also regularly met and discussed with the head teachers to understand more about each child's studying situations, thereby providing support and adjustments for them to learn better.
Senior Captain Ksor Thun from the Mass Mobilization Team of the Border Post of Le Thanh International Border Gate shared that it is not just love, but also the responsibility of the border guards towards ethnic minority children in border areas.
It can be affirmed that with love and responsibility, the motto “Border post is home; border is homeland; and ethnic minority people are brothers” has become the order of the heart, motivating border troops to overcome all difficulties and join hands with local people to build an increasingly strong and prosperous border and maintain a border of peace.
