At the event, Sr. Lt. Gen. Huynh Chien Thang, Deputy Chief of the General Staff (GS), reported on the agency’s task accomplishments gained last year and this year’s major duties.
Particularly, in 2023, the GS directed the whole military to weather difficulties, comprehensively carry out solutions to fulfill both routine and unscheduled military and defense missions.

It well grasped and forecast situational developments, gave timely recommendations, especially on basic and long-term strategic solutions to safeguard national territorial sovereignty. The whole military strictly observed combat readiness regulations, closely managed the sky, waters, border, land, and cyberspace, firmly defended national territorial sovereignty, and worked closely with relevant forces to ensure political security, social order, and safety in localities and safety of major political events of the country and military.
Also in the year, the GS effectively led agencies and units to conduct exercises, hold festivals, and perform military and self-defense work, ensuring discipline and quality.
In his speech, Defense Minister Phan Van Giang lauded the GS for its utmost efforts and attainments. He asked the GS to focus on improving its capability in studying, forecasting, evaluating, and grasping situations and its advisory role.

The GS was also requested to continue to direct the whole military to rearrange forces in an elite, compact and strong manner; build the draft law on amending and supplementing the Law on Military Service in 2015, review the Law on Non-commissioned Officers, workers and defense employees; and implement recruitment and enlistment drives.
Other directions that the GS should follow this year are improvement of training quality, exercising policies for the militia and self-defense forces, active response to disasters, incidents, search and rescue tasks, and checking the quality of weapons and equipment, among others.
