Duong Ba Quy was born and grew up in An My Village, Gio My Commune, Gio Linh District. He soon became enlightened politically and joined the revolution at the age of 13, serving as a secret guerrilla fighter in the demilitarized zone in Gio Linh District. During the resistance war against the U.S. troops, Quy directly commanded his unit in 67 battles, coordinating with other forces to eliminate 145 enemy soldiers, capture 2 ones, seize 145 weapons, destroy 22 tanks, shoot down 1 aircraft, destroy many trucks and Jeeps, and capture 12 soldiers of the Saigon puppet government. He also educated and reformed dozens of soldiers of the puppet government.

In addition, Quy directly organized five guerrilla teams and revolutionary bases, collaborating with local people and guerrillas to build hundreds of secret bunkers. He displayed exceptional courage by crossing the Canh Hom River at night, under heavy bombardment, to retrieve and safely bury the bodies of 31 fallen soldiers.

For his contributions, Duong Ba Quy has been awarded the first-class Resistance War against U.S. Invaders for National Salvation Order, 8 Feat-of-Arm Orders (including first, second, and third classes), the second-class Determined to Win Order, six “Emulation Soldier” titles, along with many other noble awards.

At the ceremony, on behalf of the State President of Vietnam, Vo Van Hung, Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee, presented the title "Hero of the People's Armed Forces" to Duong Ba Quy.
