During the visit, the Vietnamese delegation was briefed by doctor Liu Honglin, Party Secretary of Nanxishan Hospital, on the hospital’s construction and its treatment of wounded soldiers from Vietnam.

According to the doctor, with the purpose of supporting the Vietnamese people's resistance war against the U.S. imperialists, after preparations, the hospital’s construction was started in 1967 and was completed in 1968. From March 26, 1969 to 1975, under the coordination with Vietnam’s Hospital E, Nanxishan Hospital under the Ministry of Health of China, provided treatment for wounded soldiers from South Vietnam and Vietnamese officials from various localities in Vietnam.

During seven years, the hospital treated 5,432 patients, performing more than 2,000 surgeries and transfusing 780,000ml of blood for the wounded. In 1975, after the last patients returned to Vietnam, the hospital was handed over to the Guangxi Health Department, renamed Nanxishan Hospital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

On this occasion, doctor Liu also shared photos, artifacts, and equipment preserved in the hospital’s Hall of Fame with the high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense and told them heartfelt stories of Chinese doctors and nurses dedicating themselves to caring for wounded Vietnamese soldiers, as well as the deep appreciation patients showed to the hospital staff.

Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien was touched by the sacrifices and dedication of many Chinese doctors and nurses who endured hardships to care for Vietnamese wounded soldiers, even donating their own blood to save lives. Gen. Chien wrote in the hospital’s guestbook to express his gratitude to the generations of doctors and nurses who treated the personnel and soldiers of the Vietnam People’s Army during the struggle for national liberation and reunification. He affirmed that the hospital served as a living testament to the friendship between Vietnam and China during Vietnam’s national liberation struggle. The Party, Government, military, and people of Vietnam always treasures and bear in mind the solidarity and tremendous, effective support by the Chinese Party, Government, and people, particularly doctors, nurses, and staff of Nanxishan Hospital, to Vietnam.

The Vietnamese deputy defense minister wished the hospital to continue developing, standing as a beautiful flower in the garden of Vietnam-China friendship. “May the friendship between Vietnam and China flourish forever!" Gen. Chien wrote.

During the visit, the delegation watched a documentary and heard emotional stories of the hospital staff and nurses. Doctor Liu Honglin recounted the stories of doctors of the hospital, including doctor Yu Shuhui, a talented young woman from Beijing who willingly went to the challenging environment of Guilin to fulfill the special mission of treating wounded Vietnamese soldiers.

In recognition of Nanxishan Hospital's contribution to the Vietnamese people's resistance war against the U.S. imperialists, in 1974, the President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam awarded the First-Class Resistance Medal to the hospital’s staff.
