At the meeting, the Vietnamese deputy defense minister emphasized that on the basis of the traditional friendship and political trust between Vietnam and China, the bilateral defense cooperation has been strengthened and effectively carried out focusing on such fields as exchange of delegations (especially high-level ones), training, defense industry, joint research, exchange of scholars, and mutual support at multilateral forums.

The outcomes in bilateral defense cooperation have contributed to affirming it as an important pillar in the relationship between the two countries. In particular, the two sides have maintained exchange of military delegations with high frequency. Border guard forces and units stationed along the borderline have effectively carried out exchanges, twinning activities, and joint patrols, contributing to building a borderline of peace, stability, and development.

Regarding future cooperation activities, Gen. Chien laid stress on the implementation of joint perception reached by leaders of the two parties and countries during the state visit of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping to Vietnam, especially the joint statement on continuing deepening and elevating the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries, and building a Vietnam-China community with a shared future that carries strategic significance. The host suggested the two sides continue to promote defense cooperation in the coming time in accordance with inked documents and agreements and actualize cooperation orientation reached by the two sides during the official China visit of the Vietnamese Defense Minister last October.

He said that the two sides should maintain regular delegation exchanges and high-level meetings between leaders of the two central military commissions and defense ministries; continue to organize border defense friendship exchanges and exchanges between forces; promote sharing of methods and experience in conducting party and political work in the military; accelerate the signing of a number of important cooperation documents and study to expand cooperation in high-quality human resource training, defense industry, strategic research, military medicine, and in other areas of each other's strengths and demand.

This year, Vietnam will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the foundation day of the Vietnam People's Army and organize the second Vietnam International Defense Expo. The Vietnamese deputy defense minister hoped that leaders of the Chinese Central Military Commission, the Ministry of National Defense, and defense industry units will attend the celebration and participate in the exhibition, thus contributing to the success of the events.

For his part, Col. Yu Qiang pledged to report Chinese functional agencies on contents mentioned by Gen. Chien at the meeting. He thanked agencies of the Vietnamese Defense Ministry for the effective cooperation over the past time. Various activities were held in 2023, contributing to affirming the importance of the Vietnam-China relationship and the two countries’ appreciation and top priority to strengthening the bilateral relations.

The Chinese official affirmed that the Chinese Defense Attaché Office in Vietnam will exert efforts to effectively strengthen the bilateral defense cooperation relationship, making practical contribution to the Vietnam-China relationship.
