Deputy Defense Minister Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien led the Vietnamese Defense delegation to attend the event.

SDD-11 took place from September 6 to 8, attracting the participation of senior defense leaders, speakers and experts from 54 countries worldwide, and regional and international organizations.

During the opening ceremony, the RoK’s Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-sup, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, the RoK’s National Security Advisor Kim Sung-han, and Dutch Minister of Defense Kajsa Ollongren hailed the great efforts of the RoK Defense Ministry in the organization of the dialogue via face-to-face form. They also expressed their hope that the dialogue would create an opportunity for defense leaders and experts to share experience and contribute ideas so as to promote defense cooperation for peace, stability, prosperity in the region.

With the theme “Measure to deal with complicated security challenges: Strengthening international unity,” SDD-11 consisted of three plenary sessions to discuss cooperation in promoting the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, rebuilding trust in the region and the military’s role in hybrid warfare.

It also had four special sessions, focusing on technology to improve the U.N. peacekeeping operating environment, disinformation, military science and technology in military modernization, and procurement and operation of defense systems.

On the sidelines of the dialogue, the seventh Cyber security Working Group was also organized with the participation of defense leaders and experts from 43 countries as well as regional and international organizations. In addition, the Space Security Working Group was also held for the first time to discuss global cooperation in promoting security in this important field.

The SDD has been hosted annually by the RoK’s Ministry of National Defense since 2012, aiming to creating multilateral dialogue channel to exchange mutual concerns regarding security issues in the region and the world, contributing to building trust among participating countries and promoting dialogue and cooperation. The program has increasingly attracted the attention and participation of many countries, from 17 countries in 2012 to more than 50 countries in 2022.

* On this occasion, the Vietnamese deputy defense minister met with his Japanese counterpart Masami Oka. Both sides agreed to continue to bolster cooperation to deepen Vietnam-Japan bilateral cooperation. They also committed themselves to fulfilling their role of co-chairing the ADMM+ Expert Group on peacekeeping, as well as the organization of the 16th meeting of the expert group.

General Chien also took this occasion to send invitation to the Japanese Defense Ministry to attend the first international defense exhibition hosted by Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defense which will be held in early December 2022.
