During the talks, General Phan Van Giang underlined that Vietnam and Indonesia are neighboring countries sharing a maritime border and are active, responsible members of the ASEAN Community. The upgrade of their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March this year marked a historic milestone, opening a new chapter in bilateral cooperative ties, of which politics, defense, and security are key pillars.

Over the past time, Vietnam-Indonesia defense cooperation has obtained positive outcomes, making important contribution to consolidating political trust between the two countries, especially in such fields as delegation exchange and contact at all levels, particularly high-level ones; cooperation between services, arms, and law enforcement forces at sea; defense industry and U.N. peacekeeping operations; and collaboration between strategic research institutions.

Both sides have actively consulted and supported each other at multilateral forums, particularly those led by ASEAN, as well as at international events hosted by either country.
The Vietnamese defense chief required that in the time to come, the two sides should continue to enhance trustworthy, comprehensive, and substantive cooperation, with a focus on delegation exchanges, meetings and contacts at all levels; promoting the efficiency of existing mechanisms, especially the defense policy dialogue mechanism; boosting cooperation in training and defense industry, and collaboration between services and arms; and maintaining close consultation and mutual support at multilateral mechanisms and forums.
For his part, Mr. Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin underscored the development of bilateral defense cooperation based on mutual trust between the two sides, affirming that the visit marks a milestone in Indonesia-Vietnam defense relations.
He also proposed that the Ministries of National Defense of both countries would further promote cooperation in line with the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established during the state visit to Indonesia by Party General Secretary To Lam in March this year.
