During the conversation, Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan affirmed that the bilateral defense cooperation has been practically and intensively promoted, of which the collaboration in U.N. peacekeeping operations has been paid special attention to and prioritized by the two countries.

The Vietnamese official said that the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two countries’ defense ministries on September 15, 2015, is a foundation for the two sides to further expand their cooperation in U.N. peacekeeping.

The Vietnamese deputy chief of General Staff also highlighted the active support of Japan since Vietnam joined U.N. peacekeeping operations. He recalled that Japan has shown goodwill, actively supported, shared experiences, and helped Vietnam enhance the capacity of its peacekeeping forces, especially for engineering one.

He expressed his hope that the 16th Meeting of the Experts' Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations (EWG PKO) Cycle 4 for the 2021-2023 period within the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM +) in Vietnam will succeed, contributing to further promoting the Vietnam – Japan cooperation in U.N. peacekeeping, thus maintaining peace and stability in the region and the world.

For her part, Ms Matsuzawa Tomoko, who is Director for Defense Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region of the International Policy Division of the Defense Policy Bureau under the Japanese Ministry of Defense, thanked Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan for the reception. She highlighted the breakthrough developments of the Japan – Vietnam relations, especially in U.N. peacekeeping operations.
