This statement was underlined by Major General Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and General Director of the Military Industry-Telecoms (Viettel) Group, at the Viettel Stars event which was recently held in Hanoi.
"Don't sit on your laurels"
Viettel's Stars is an annual event held by Viettel to honor the outstanding individuals and collectives in the world. The message "Don't sit on your laurels" from Major General Tao Duc Thang served as a reminder of the necessary attitude towards successes obtained in the past and the challenges ahead, especially as Vietnam faces significant breakthroughs in science and technology.

According to Major General Tao Duc Thang, 2025 is a year with many important targets and tasks assigned to Viettel by the Party, the State, and the Ministry of National Defense. Many new opportunities are opening up, and there are high expectations for Viettel to take the lead with the stature of a global technology group. However, the trust and reputation can be lost if Viettel becomes complacent and sits on its laurels.
Viettel had a successful year of 2024 as a technology enterprise, being the first telecom operator in Vietnam to deploy 5G networks, successfully developing high-tech military products, and exceeding business expectations in international markets. Viettel also continues to take on national strategic technology tasks, including developing semiconductor industry in Vietnam, 5G/6G devices, and satellites.
Gen. Thang believed that success carries the hidden risk of subjectivity, which could affect Viettel's competitive advantages and strength.
“Viettel has become stronger not because of victories in the past, but because it has never stopped, never been satisfied with itself, and always strives to move forward, go further, and do better every day," he stated.
This spirit is reflected in the targets Viettel has set for 2025. They are building 20,000 5G stations, investing in large-scale data centers, ready to build a semiconductor chip factory, mastering satellite technology and projects on high-tech equipment design and manufacturing.

Being ready for bigger challenges
Gen. Thang underscored the importance of the humble attitude as evaluating achievements obtained in the past to aim for higher targets. "Be humble when looking back upon success. Ahead are even greater targets; thereby, difficulties will be greater than before."
Amid unexpected geopolitical fluctuations, economic recession, natural disasters or technological changes, if Viettel is just one step slower, it can lose opportunities and its leading position. Therefore, he required Viettel’s staff to stay ready for challenges, continuously learn, and innovate.
The Viettel chairman affirmed that 2025 is the year for creating momentum for the era of scientific and technological development, innovation, and national digital transformation. The group should increase investment in technology and research; develop and expand international cooperation, and require its staff to meet new and more difficult tasks.
"Keep learning and innovating, as what brings us success today may no longer be valid tomorrow," Gen. Thang emphasized.
